Puli itta keerai

 Hi friends,

Welcome to another blog. Now one more traditional Tirunelveli recipe for your eyes.

Puli itta keerai. This is a recipe which has been a regular from my childhood. I love to make this as it is tasty, healthy and easy too.

Puli itta keerai is very similar to sambar. It is usually a very good side dish for poricha kuzhambu.

Let's jump on to the ingredients

Keerai - 1 bunch ( I used arai keerai) ( amaranthus)

Tamarind :- 1 lemon sized ball soaked

Salt :- to taste

Turmeric Powder

Mustard seeds

Methi seeds

Hing

To roast and grind:-

U.dal :-1 tbsp

Coriander seeds :-1 tbsp

Red chillies :-3

Pepper :-1 tsp

Roast everything in a tsp of oil and grind into a powder.

Wash the greens well.Boil the greens in water and keep it aside and mash it well . But don't keep it too smooth.

In a kadai, add oil. Once oil is hot,add mustard seeds, methi seeds ,hing and broken red chillies.

Once all the seeds are fried well, add tamarind water  and turmeric powder. Now add the ground powder and salt.

Boil the mixture till there's no raw smell from tamarind.

Now add cooked and mashed keerai to it.

Now let it boil for a minute or two . If you feel the kuzhambu is still thin you can add rice flour slurry to it .This will thicken it instantly.

Puli itta keerai is ready.

Serve it hot with rice, ghee and appalam.

Some tips

We can also add sambar powder instead of the freshly ground powder.

Just keerai mixed with rice is a good lunch box recipe.

I have already shared puli itta poricha kuzhambu in the blog.  https://jairamkitchen.blogspot.com/2020/05/tirunelveli-puli-itta-poricha-kuzhambu.html
