Tirunelveli puli itta poricha kuzhambu

Hi everyone,
Do you have vegetables that are limp and lifeless. Don't know what to do with it. Have a feeling that nothing good may be made out of it. Want to throw it out. Don't. Many people suffer to get even one good meal in a day. We are that blessed lot who get everything at our doorstep and stay safe in our homes experimenting with new recipes and new ideas. So let us not waste . There are many things which can be made with "not so" fresh vegetables. One such thing is "puli itta poricha kuzhambu ".
I had 2 carrots, 1 potato and 1 big snake gourd that I bought a week ago. That snake gourd was not fresh to be made into porial. So I made this kuzhambu.

INGREDIENTS:-
  • Vegetables          :- 2 cups
  • Tamarind            :- 1 lemon sized ball soaked
  • T.dal                     :- 1/2 cup cooked
  • Salt                       :- to taste
  • Grated coconut  :- 2 tbsp

To roast and grind:-
  • U.dal                      :-1 tbsp
  • Coriander seeds  :-1 tbsp
  • Red chillies           :-3
  • Pepper                   :-1 tsp
Roast everything in a tsp of oil and grind into a smooth paste.

Boil the vegetables till they are cooked well. Add the tamarind water to it. Boil it till there is no raw smell.Add the ground paste and salt to it.
Boil for 5 minutes. Add cooked t.dal and boil for 3 minutes. After everything comes together switch the gas off.
In a kadai ,in a tsp of coconut oil or gingelly oil add a tsp of mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves, 1 tsp of channa dal . Fry for a minute then add coconut. Fry coconut till it changes color then add it to the kuzhambu.
Tasty puli itta poricha kuzhambu is ready.

Some tips
Any vegetable is fine.
Coconut is not ground here. Just added as a tempering.
If you want it to be done quick you can also use sambar powder instead of that paste. But this gives a unique flavor.
If there are only less vegetables we can also add cooked konda kadalai or karamani.

We can use this to mix with rice and eat with some kind of vegetable roast or appalam.
I also try to post recipes where we can use whatever is available at home and not run to the shops.

I have shared a recipe similar to this. It's called puli itta keerai.
