Lemon Mysore rasam

Welcome to another blog. Are you a pure south indian, then you will know the love for rasam . There is no meal without rasam. Be it a lazy lunch or an elaborate wedding menu. It is such an important part of food.
Usually rasam is made very simply at home with tamarind, tomato,dal water and rasam powder at home.
Today I am sharing a recipe which I love. This can be made on special occasions. It's lemon Mysore rasam. The only difference between a regular Mysore rasam and this is the addition of lemon juice instead of tamarind.

To roast and grind
Black pepper -1 tsp
Red chillies - 4-6
Coriander seeds - 1.5 tsp
Channa dal - 1 tsp
Oil - 1 tsp
For rasam
Lemon -2
Green chilli -2
Tomato -1 chopped
Tur dal - 1 cup
Turmeric powder
Salt
Ghee - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds, jeera - 1 tsp each
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Please roast the ingredients given under the roast and grind with oil till it turns golden brown. Once cooled, grind it into a smooth paste.
Meanwhile, cook tur dal with turmeric powder till it is mushy. Strain some water from cooked dal and keep it aside.
In a deep pot, add cooked dal . Make sure that it is like a paste. Add turmeric powder,salt, chopped tomatoes, some curry leaves and the ground paste. Let it boil for a good 7-8 minutes in medium flame. If cooked dal is too thick , add water to adjust the consistency.
Once it is boiled, add dal water kept aside. Once sides start frothing, switch off the flame.
In a kadai, add ghee . Add mustard seeds, jeera, hing, curry leaves and chopped green chillies. Once everything crackles, add it to the hot rasam.
Now add juice of 2 lemons to the rasam .Mix it well. Add one handful of chopped coriander leaves as garnish.
Hot, tasty , flavourful rasam is ready for any day or any part of the day.
Some tips
Tomatoes are optional. If tomatoes are sour, the number of lemon can be adjusted.
Spiciness and sourness can be changed according to our taste buds.
This works for 5-6 people for one meal .
