Thakkali Kai - Green tomato pitla
Hi friends,
Welcome to another blog of mine. Today I have come with a traditional, well known recipe but with a different vegetable.
It's the time of pitla. In every south Indian home, pitlas are made . We have heard a lot about brinjal pitla ,pagarkkai - bitter gourd pitla etc. But there is one vegetable which my mom likes to have in pitla. That is green tomato.
Today it's green tomato pitla.
Ingredients
Thakkali kai - 8 small ones ( green tomato)
Salt
Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized soaked
Tur dal - 1/2 cup
To roast and grind:-
Coriander seeds -11/2 tbsp
Channa dal -1 tbsp
Urad dal -3/4 tbsp
Coconut -1/4 coconut
Chillies -8
To temper:-
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Curry leaves
Hing
In a pot , add chopped green tomato pieces with salt, turmeric powder and tamarind water and let it boil. Let the tomatoes cook a little. Some of the green tomatoes are extremely sour. In that case please reduce the quantity of tamarind.
In a kadai, roast all the ingredients given under the roast and grind,to a golden colour. After cooling down, grind that into a smooth paste.
In a pressure cooker, cook the tur dal with a pinch of turmeric powder.
Now all preparations are done.
In the boiling gravy with tomato, add the ground paste and cook it for 5 minutes.
Once there is no raw smell, add the cooked and mashed tur dal to the gravy.
Cook for 5 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding water, if needed. Adjust salt if needed.
Once everything comes together, switch the gravy off.
In the kadai, add oil , Mustard seeds, urad dal, hing and curry leaves. After everything is fried, add to the gravy.
Tasty green tomato pitla is ready.
It can be used as a side dish for more kuzhambu or can be used like a sambar. We like to use this like a sambar and mix it with rice and eat. It goes really well with all kinds of vegetable roast or even appalam.
Please try and let me know after cooking this.
