Upma kozhukattai/ pidi kozhukattai

 Hi friends,

Today, it is the time for upma kozhukattai. It is one of the traditional tiffin dishes which can be had for breakfast, snacks and dinner .

Usually , at our house, we have it for dinner with thengai/ coconut thogayal. When elders at our house make it for dinner, it was always without onion or garlic. That is why ,we always made thogayal.

Upma kozhukattai is now made with rice , millets , sooji and other things. But in our house it was always raw rice. Since it is twice cooked , it is good for digestion too.

Now let's get to the ingredients

Ingredients

Raw rice - 1 cup

T.dal - 2-3 tbsp

Pepper - 1 Tsp

Red chillies -2-3

Grated coconut - 2 tbsp

Hing

Salt

Curry leaves

For tempering

Mustard seeds - 1tsp

Urad Dal - 1tsp

Channa Dal -1 Tsp

In a dry mixer jar, take the rice, Dal, pepper chillies, hing  and salt.  Grind the ingredients to rava like consistency. I usually add curry leaves while grinding as it will be hidden and no one can throw it away😀

In a kadai, add gingelly oil . Add mustard seeds, urad Dal and channa Dal. Once everything is fried ,add 2.5 cups of water to the kadai. Add salt to it. Let the water boil.

Once water comes to a rolling boil, add the ground rava and cook it in a medium flame.

In a minutes time, you can see the rice rava getting thick and look like upma.

Once it looks like upma, add grated coconut and mix. Now, remove from flame and let it cool.

Once cooled ,take the upma and roll into oval balls.

Now in a idly steamer, take the rolled balls and cook it for 10 minutes.

Upma kozhukattai is ready.

Here, I have served with tomato chutney and thogayal.

Serve it hot with coconut thogayal or onion chutney or coconut chutney or gotsu . We can also make this with idly rava. For gotsu, follow this recipe .
